Global leading tech companies are speeding up their moves toward the so-called super app, which is provided as much as possible by one app. In particular, among large tech companies that do not have strong app store platforms such as Apple and Google, SuperApp is emerging as a game changer to try.

The fact that China’s Tencent’s super app strategy through WeChat has shown considerable power is also affecting the spread of super apps in various fields. Tencent WeChat has secured more than 1.3 billion users by starting with mobile messengers and expanding into payments, e-commerce, and games. On WeChat, companies can also upload applications called mini programs, and millions of mini programs have already appeared.

This led to WeChat’s strengthening of its status as an operating system for the Chinese Internet, according to the British economist.

In Southeast Asia, super apps have also become mainstream business models. In addition to Grab, Goto, a combination of ride-sharing platform Gozek and e-commerce marketplace Tokopedia, jumped into the No. 1 super app race. Both Grab and the struggle have halved their corporate value this year, but the concept itself remains strong, according to the Economist.
